Name: Nick Foligno, Captain
Birthplace: Buffalo, New York
Age: 28, born 10/31/87
Height/Weight: 6 ft/ 210 lbs
What he has going for him:
After a stellar ’14-’15 campaign Foligno was named CBJ Captain and has been an outstanding face for the organization. In the ’14-’15 NHL season he was an All-Star Captain, ranked tied for 10th in the NHL in points (73), and was also 9th in the NHL in shooting percentage (17%). Also 2016 brings a new hockey season, so he has that going for him.
What he has going against him:
Look, he’s our team Captain. I know that the first player profile this site has ever done should have more of a positive spin, but facts are facts. Nick Foligno is great for the franchise and an unbelievable part of the Columbus community, but I think even he wants to forget the ’15-’16 season. No one expected another 73 point season per se, but no one expected for him to score a half-point more (37) than half of what he had produced the year before. Remember, CBJ did not name a Captain in ’14-’15 and now we have to wonder if the “C” wasn’t a premature award after one amazing season for Foligno. If anything else, my heart goes out to the guy. He gets the “C” on his sweater, we have an amazing preseason last year with lots of positive expectations and we go 0-8 to start, fire our head coach, and other than the hat trick he had against Pittsburgh, there are not a ton of bright spots in there. Here’s to a fresh beginning.
Prediction for this season:
Like many in the Columbus area, I believe the weight of the little letter on his chest caused him to put too much pressure on himself last season. I believe with our improved back end, there are going to be more scoring opportunities up front and, maybe more importantly, he finds his way again on the power play looking more like ’14-’15 Nick Foligno (11 pp goals) and less like ’15-’16 Nick Foligno (Zero pp goals).
’16-’17 Jackets Rant stat line prediction: Goals: 23, Assists: 35, Total Points: 58
